Eight Arrested, 25 Identified for Vandalism During Sopore Protests

'Sopore's illegal act will not go unpunished': IGP Kashmir

Sopore, April 14: Eight persons have been arrested and 25 others identified for alleged involvement in vandalism and stone-pelting during protests over a student harassment case in Sopore, police said on Tuesday.

The arrests followed night-long raids after protests erupted on Monday at a government girls’ higher secondary school in the town, where a female student had accused a senior lecturer of harassment. The lecturer has since been suspended, officials said.

V. K. Birdi, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, said those involved in unlawful activities would face action. He stated that individuals had taken the law into their own hands and such acts would not go unpunished.

Police said the arrested individuals were involved in incidents of vandalism and stone-pelting during the protests. A senior officer said that while the demonstration was initially peaceful, some elements disrupted it by engaging in unlawful activities. Authorities added that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining identified الأشخاص.

The IGP clarified that those involved in the violence had no connection with the educational institution where the incident was reported.

Meanwhile, police appreciated the cooperation of students, parents and local residents in maintaining calm and urged continued support in identifying anti-social elements.

The Cyber Police Station Sopore also issued an advisory cautioning citizens against sharing unverified or provocative content on social media. Officials said such material could disturb public order and create panic.

Authorities said online activity is being monitored and warned that legal action would be taken against those found spreading misinformation or inflammatory content.

Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order in the area and said necessary measures are being taken to ensure normalcy.
