Bandipora, April 09: An awareness programme under the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) initiative titled “Say No to Drugs” was organised at Boys Middle School (BMS) Kaloosa to address the growing menace of drug abuse among the younger generation.

The programme was convened by Hilal Ahmad Reshi, Coordinator of the IEC programme, along with officials of the Municipal Council Bandipora, who emphasised the urgent need for collective action against substance abuse. IEC-nominated officials, including Dr. Aftab Jan, Mr. Arsulan Habib, Dr. Umiesa and Mr. Iqbal Ahmad, were present on the occasion.

The Headmaster of BMS Kaloosa, members of the teaching staff, community workers of Municipal Council Bandipora and a large number of students actively participated in the programme.

Speakers highlighted that drug addiction has emerged as a silent yet devastating threat affecting youth due to factors such as curiosity, peer pressure, emotional stress and lack of awareness. They explained that substance abuse not only damages physical health but also affects mental well-being, weakens decision-making ability and leads to anxiety, depression and social isolation.

Students were informed about the long-term impact of addiction, including poor academic performance, broken relationships and serious health complications.

The officials stressed that awareness at an early stage is crucial in preventing young people from falling into addiction. By understanding the real consequences, students can make responsible choices and resist negative influences.

The programme also underscored the importance of education, discipline and healthy activities as positive alternatives to harmful habits. Students were encouraged to focus on academics, participate in sports and build confidence through constructive engagement. Teachers were urged to continue guiding students through open discussions on social issues and moral values.

Participants showed keen interest throughout the session, reflecting the importance of addressing social challenges within educational institutions. The initiative also highlighted the need for community-wide cooperation involving families, educators, local authorities and civil society to effectively combat drug abuse.

The programme concluded with a strong message that awareness is the first step toward prevention. Students were encouraged to act as ambassadors of change within their families and communities, promoting the vision of a safe and drug-free society.
