Pampore, April 01: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir’s (SKUAST-K’s) Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Malangpora on Wednesday organised a Field Day programme at Patalbagh area of Pampore with the aim of promoting scientific agricultural practices and strengthening farmer–scientist interaction.

Director Extension, SKUAST-K, Prof. Rehana Habib Kanth, attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, she emphasised the importance of adopting modern agricultural technologies and research-based farming practices to enhance productivity, improve crop quality, and increase farmers’ income. She highlighted the significance of Field Day programmes in bridging the gap between agricultural research and farming communities.

During the event, Chief Scientist, SKUAST-K, and Head of KVK Malangpora, Prof. Javaid Ahmad Mugloo, along with other scientists from KVK Malangpora, highlighted the performance of mustard crop under the recommended package of practices. They also interacted with farmers regarding various production constraints and their possible solutions. Farmers were encouraged to adopt modern techniques to achieve better yield and profitability.

It is pertinent to mention that in this cluster village, more than 100 hectares of land have been covered under the National Mission on Oilseeds, significantly contributing to the promotion of mustard cultivation and strengthening oilseed production in the area, officials told Kashmir Convener.

A unique feature of the event was the enthusiastic participation of school students, who were sensitised about the importance of agriculture, oilseed crops, and sustainable farming practices. Their interaction with scientists and farmers made the programme more vibrant and educational.

The programme also provided a platform for farmers to interact directly with agricultural scientists, discuss field-level challenges, and seek expert guidance.

Participants appreciated the initiative and expressed hope that such programmes would continue to enhance awareness and promote modern agriculture across the region.

Speaking to Kashmir Convener, Director Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof. Rihana Habib Kanth, said that Krishi Vigyan Kendra Malangpora has organized this Field Day programme at Patalbagh Pampore to interact directly with the farmers. She said the main purpose of the Field Day is to meet those farmers who had taken the seed, ask them about their experience, and personally observe how the mustard variety is performing in the field.

She added that the programme also provides an opportunity for farmers from surrounding areas, who have not yet cultivated this variety, to see its performance live in the field. Through such interaction, farmers can learn from one another about where the seed was obtained, which variety was used, how it was sown, what spacing was maintained, and how nutrients were applied.

Prof. Kanth said that other farmers can assess the crop’s performance themselves by visiting the field. At present, she noted, farmers are witnessing that the crop has shown good flowering, and the entire area reflects healthy fertility and uniform growth. She further said that germination has taken place successfully across the field, which indicates the promising performance of the mustard variety.
