Jammu, Mar 31 : The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday informed the Legislative Assembly that over 900 qualified Physical Education graduates remain on the unemployment register, even as 994 posts of Physical Education Teachers (PETs) lie vacant across the Union Territory.

In a written reply to PDP leader and Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, Minister for Youth Services and Sports stated that according to the Employment Department’s portal (jakemp.nic.in), 440 candidates holding B.P.Ed degrees and 473 with M.P.Ed qualifications are currently registered as unemployed.

The government, however, sought to clarify that efforts were underway to address the issue, informing the House that 20 lecturers had been appointed against sanctioned posts while 2,395 Physical Education graduates were engaged under the Rehbar-e-Khel (ReK) policy of 2017.

Regarding the vacant posts, the government said the 994 PET positions are being held for the regularization of Rehbar-e-Khel employees. The total number of PET posts, including existing vacancies, stands at 2,395.

“As per the Rehbar-e-Khel Policy formulated vide Government Order No. 141-Edu (YSS) of 2017 dated 27-10-2017, the regularization of 2,395 Rehbar-e-Khel is to be carried out in a staggered manner, upon completion of seven years of satisfactory and continuous service, against the available/created posts of Physical Education Teacher,” the Minister said in the reply.

The Minister further stated that modalities for implementing the regularization process are presently under consideration. Clarifying the position on recruitment, the government said no proposal to defreeze the vacant posts and refer them to the J&K Services Selection Recruitment Board (JKSSRB) was under consideration, as these posts are reserved for the regularization of ReK employees in line with the existing policy.
