Jammu, Mar 31: Congress legislator from Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat on Tuesday termed the unilateral withdrawal of security cover from mainstream political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir “unfortunate”, asserting that providing security is a state’s obligation and not a matter of gratitude.

Raising the issue in the Legislative Assembly during the ongoing session, MLA Bhat said risks to life remain in the Union Territory despite an improvement in the situation, particularly for those aligned with mainstream parties.

“This is a sensitive state. Even if the situation has improved, risks to life remain, particularly for mainstream parties and leaders. Across the board, there is no discrimination. Everyone runs a risk,” the Bandipora MLA said.

He asserted that the state cannot view security as a favour extended to its elected representatives. “When there are security concerns, security is provided by the state. It is a commitment to protect its citizens, especially those with public representation. We treat every life at risk as equal,” MLA Bhat said.

Congress leader claimed that protection was withdrawn at a time when representatives were entitled to additional cover during the Assembly session. He cited his own case to highlight the disparity, stating that his constituency remains among the most vulnerable areas yet he has no house guards, while a leader from another party has seven security personnel at his residence.

“What is the state doing? Are we not part of this country? Don’t we have constitutional rights?” he asked.

Demanding immediate restoration of security, MLA Bhat said mainstream parties that stand with the national flag already tolerate hostility. “Will you empty their walls?” he questioned.
