Sopore, Mar 28: Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir Range (NKR), Maqsood-ul-Zaman, on Saturday said significant success has been achieved in curbing drug smuggling in the border districts of north Kashmir, with property seizure emerging as a game-changer while maintaining that the fight against terrorism and the narcotics trade remains the police’s top priority.

Speaking on the sidelines of a sports function in Sopore, the DIG as per Kashmir Convener emphasized that the police action programme is being effectively utilized to tackle the twin challenges.

“As we have said before, our number one priority is terrorism, and our number two priority is the fight against drugs. We have done a lot of good work in this regard. We have made a large number of arrests, and particularly the seizure of properties has had a huge impact,” DIG said.

The top police officer highlighted that north Kashmir, especially the border districts, was a key route for drug smuggling, but police efforts have yielded substantial results.

“In north Kashmir, the border districts, drugs were smuggled from here, and we have been successful in controlling it to a great extent. This success is not only due to the actions of the J&K Police but also with the help of civil society and the common people. I attribute this to them,” he said.

The DIG also underscored the importance of engaging youth in positive activities as a preventive measure against both militancy and drug abuse. He said programmes are being organized at schools and other institutions to steer young people away from unproductive activities.

“Under the Police Action Programme, we organize different programmes at school levels, at other institutions, in sports categories, debates, and seminars. The basic purpose is to engage the youth in positive activities and keep them away from drugs and other unproductive activities,” he said.

Reiterating the police’s zero-tolerance approach, the DIG warned that action would be taken against anyone spreading rumors on social media that could disturb public order, adding that all stakeholders must act responsibly.
