Jammu, March 14: Girish Kalia visited the Chinar Eco Warriors to review the unit’s work under the Greening Jammu and Kashmir initiative, officials said.

During the visit, the Director General of the Territorial Army was briefed on afforestation, ecological restoration and community outreach activities being carried out by the battalion in different parts of the Union Territory.

Officials said the programme is being implemented in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department and is supported by projects funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

According to the Army, the battalion has been involved in a range of initiatives aimed at promoting ecological awareness and expanding plantation activities in the region. During the briefing, Lt Gen Kalia was informed about ongoing efforts to increase afforestation, promote environmental awareness and involve local communities in conservation initiatives.

Addressing officers and personnel of the unit, the Director General acknowledged the battalion’s role in promoting environmental stewardship and engaging local communities, including children and youth, in ecological awareness programmes.

Officials said the battalion has also been working to create awareness about heritage trees and medicinal plant species found in the region, as part of efforts to reconnect communities with traditional ecological knowledge.

During the visit, the Director General also reviewed a collaborative initiative between the Chinar Eco Warriors and the Forest Department to promote the Miyawaki method for plantation of medicinal trees. The technique involves planting clusters of tree species in a limited space to accelerate forest growth and support ecological restoration.

The battalion has also introduced the Kokedama method of plant cultivation, an approach that replaces conventional plastic or clay pots with soil wrapped in natural materials. Officials said the method helps reduce plastic use and promotes sustainable plant cultivation.

The Director General noted that such initiatives align with broader environmental sustainability goals and global campaigns such as United Nations efforts to address plastic pollution.

Officials said the visit concluded with the Director General interacting with officers and personnel of the unit and acknowledging their work in ecological conservation and community engagement initiatives across Jammu and Kashmir. (PIB)
