New Delhi, Feb 13: The Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a four-day in-situ air combat exercise with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) in the Indian Ocean Region from February 9 to 12, aimed at enhancing operational interoperability and strengthening bilateral defence ties.

The exercise featured IAF’s Su-30MKI multirole fighters operating alongside the RTAF’s SAAB Gripen aircraft in simulated air combat scenarios. Extended-range maritime operations by the Indian contingent were supported by IL-78 mid-air refuelling tankers, enabling sustained air presence over the sea.

Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft of the IAF provided enhanced surveillance and command support, while Ground Control Interception (GCI) elements of the RTAF coordinated operations from Thailand.

The Indian aircraft operated from airbases in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, underscoring India’s strategic reach in the region. Thai Gripen jets flew from their home bases in Thailand.

Defence officials said the engagement offered valuable operational exposure to both air forces and facilitated the exchange of best practices in air combat tactics and maritime domain operations.

The drill is seen as part of the deepening India–Thailand strategic partnership under India’s “Act East” policy, marking a growing collaboration in the aerospace and defence domain. (PIB)
