Government Degree College for Women, Sopore Celebrates 79th Independence Day

Sopore, Aug 15, 2025: The Government Degree College for Women, Sopore, commemorated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervour. The celebrations began with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem.

Principal Prof. Subeena Chiloo, in her presidential address, highlighted the significance of Independence Day, paying tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters. She urged staff and students to work with dedication and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth, inspiring the audience to strive for excellence in academics and life.

In the second session, third-semester student Toiba Jan delivered an engaging talk on India’s Freedom Struggle. The event also included a felicitation ceremony, honouring students who excelled in college and intercollegiate competitions. The awards recognized their achievements and encouraged continued excellence.

The proceedings were efficiently managed by Dr. Aadil Mohi UD Din Sheikh, Head of the Kashmiri Department and Media In-charge, along with the NSS officers. Teaching and non-teaching staff, including local fund employees, attended the event. Dr. Murtaza Fazal Ali Geelani, Staff Secretary, presented the formal vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of organizers, participants, and attendees. Refreshments were served at the conclusion of the programme.

It is noteworthy that all cultural activities scheduled for the day were cancelled in solidarity with the victims of the recent cloudburst in Kishtwar, following directions from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of J&K.
