New Delhi, May 14: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has commenced its two-week Online Short-Term Internship (OSTI) programme, with 80 university-level students selected from a pool of 1,795 applicants across 21 States and Union Territories.

The internship is aimed at imparting foundational knowledge and insights into the promotion and protection of human rights in India.

In his inaugural address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal emphasized the importance of youth as carriers of India’s civilisational ethos rooted in empathy, compassion, and justice. He urged the interns to act as ambassadors of justice, equality, and dignity, and to seize the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the constitutional framework and human rights mechanisms in India.

Highlighting the rationale behind conducting the programme online, Shri Bharat Lal said it enhances accessibility for students from remote and far-flung areas who might otherwise be unable to travel to Delhi. “Reflection over reaction,” he advised, encouraging participants to introspect and engage meaningfully with the subject.

He also gave a historical and legal overview of human rights evolution in India, touching on constitutional guarantees, the role of the Supreme Court, and India’s long-standing tradition of providing refuge to persecuted communities.

Joint Secretary Shri Samir Kumar provided an overview of the meticulously designed curriculum, which includes expert lectures, virtual institutional visits (including to Tihar Jail), team and individual competitions, and interactive sessions. Participants will engage in activities like group research presentations, book reviews, and declamation contests, gaining practical insight into human rights issues and advocacy strategies.

Lt. Col. Virender Singh, who serves as the Course Coordinator, will guide the interns through the diverse and enriching programme.

This internship initiative continues NHRC’s mission to build awareness, sensitise future leaders, and strengthen the foundation of human rights culture among India’s youth.
