BUDGAM, Apr 16: A two-year-old nomadic child died after being mauled by stray dogs in Zoonipora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Thursday evening, officials and locals said.

The incident occurred in Baghi Shukarshah locality of Nowgam, where the toddler, identified as Imran Mushtaq Khan, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, was near his family’s temporary settlement when a group of stray dogs attacked him.

According to local residents, the dogs inflicted critical injuries before the child could be rescued. He was immediately shifted to Sub-District Hospital Pampore for treatment, where doctors declared him dead shortly after arrival.

The incident has left the family and members of the nomadic community in shock. Relatives said they had earlier raised concerns over stray dog attacks in the area and called for immediate intervention by the authorities.

Family members have sought financial assistance and accountability, alleging that repeated complaints about the stray dog menace had not been adequately addressed.

Residents of the area also expressed concern over the increasing number of stray dogs and urged municipal authorities to take preventive measures, including sterilisation drives and control mechanisms.

Officials have not yet issued a detailed statement on the incident. However, locals said the tragedy has renewed calls for coordinated action to address the issue and prevent similar incidents.
