Pampore, October 08: The Department of Wildlife Protection, J&K, Wetlands Division Kashmir, concluded Wildlife Week with an awareness programme at Government Degree College (GDC) Pampore, calling for collective efforts to protect Kashmir’s wetlands and rich wildlife.

Observed from October 2 to 8, the programme brought together wildlife officials, environmentalists, academicians and students to highlight the importance of conserving natural habitats and protecting the region’s biodiversity.

Principal GDC Pampore Dr Gazala Gayas, Dr Shafia Wani, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Management and Public Administration (IMPA), Government of J&K, Sajjid Farooq, Range Officer, Lakes and Wetlands Pampore, Advocate Nadeem Qadri, Aadil Bhat and John Mohammad Mir, Block Officer, Pampore Wetlands, besides other dignitaries and officials, attended the programme.

A large number of students participated in the event, which focused on sensitising the younger generation about wildlife protection, wetland conservation and the need to preserve Kashmir’s natural heritage.

Speakers emphasised that Kashmir’s wetlands are not only ecologically significant but also serve as vital habitats for seasonal migratory birds. They stressed that protecting these wetlands is essential for preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance.

They called for greater public participation in conservation efforts and urged students to play an active role in spreading awareness and promoting responsible environmental practices.

The programme concluded with a strong message that wildlife and wetland conservation cannot be left to government agencies alone and requires sustained participation from local communities, students and all sections of society.

Speaking to Kashmir Convener, Range Officer of Lakes/Pampore, Sajjid Farooq, said that Wildlife Week 2026 was observed in collaboration with Government Degree College Pampore with the primary objective of creating awareness among students about wildlife and highlighting its importance in our lives.

He said Wildlife Week is a symbolic week observed every year to promote awareness, but the message of wildlife conservation should not remain limited to these dates. “Awareness about wildlife conservation should continue throughout the year,” he said.

Farooq said the department regularly engages with students and its ambassadors to educate them about their surroundings, wildlife and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

He further emphasized the need to strike a balance between development and environmental conservation, urging people, particularly students and the younger generation, to work alongside the Department of Wildlife Protection, J&K, in protecting wildlife and preserving the region’s natural heritage.
