Telangana Man Rebuilds Life after Overcoming Substance Dependence
Convener News Desk
New Delhi, November 4: A rehabilitation programme supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has helped a 30-year-old man from Telangana overcome substance dependence, regain employment and rebuild his family and social life.
The man, identified as Suresh Kumar (name changed), is a resident of Karimnagar district. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), he had struggled with alcohol and tobacco dependence since his late teenage years, with peer pressure and emotional stress contributing to his substance use.
Over time, the dependence affected his physical and mental health, family relationships and professional life. Irregular attendance at work, declining confidence and financial difficulties further worsened his situation.
A turning point came on November 12, 2025, when he received support at the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), run by Prakriti Environment Society in Karimnagar under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) Scheme.
As part of the rehabilitation process, he received individual and group counselling, family counselling, motivational interviewing and relapse-prevention therapy. Medical supervision, emotional support and vocational guidance were also provided to help him work towards recovery and reintegration into society.
The PIB said sustained counselling and family participation played an important role in his progress.
Kumar is now maintaining sobriety, has resumed regular employment and is participating in family and social activities. His monthly income has also improved to around ₹15,000, helping him achieve greater financial stability.
