Srinagar, April 30: National Conference leader Tanvir Sadiq on Tuesday accused the Peoples Democratic Party of presiding over large-scale force during the 2016 unrest, alleging that 1.3 million pellets and around 4,000 cartridges were used within the first 30 days under then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, leaving nearly 7,000 people injured.

He further claimed that around 10,000 individuals were booked under the Public Safety Act during the same period, asserting that the scale of action reflected a harsh administrative approach. Sadiq said expectations that the PDP leadership would “mend its ways” had not materialized.

The remarks come amid renewed political sparring, with an RTI disclosure placed in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly revealing that the PDP had not deputed any polling agents during the Rajya Sabha elections. The disclosure has added a new dimension to the criticism, with opposition leaders questioning the party’s institutional preparedness and electoral conduct.

Sadiq also referred to the party’s political decisions at the national level, alleging that the PDP abstained during voting on the Triple Talaq legislation, which he described as reflective of inconsistent positioning on key issues.

Referring to historical events, he said that after the Hawal incident, former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had praised then governor Jagmohan, a move he suggested was contradictory to public sentiment at the time.

On a recent controversy, Sadiq condemned the filing of an FIR against individuals who uploaded a video of Syed Ali Geelani related to the Urdu language. He said such videos circulating on social media “do not have any impact” and questioned the need for legal action.

He also urged Iltija Mufti to upload what he described as the second part of the video, claiming it contains remarks attributing harm to the Urdu language to the PDP.
