Sopore, October 5: The North Kashmir Women’s Sports Festival will be made an annual event, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore Iftikhar Talib said on Monday.

Talib made the announcement while inaugurating the Government Degree College (GDC) for Women, Sopore edition of the North Kashmir Women Sports Festival 2026.

Congratulating the college management and organisers, the SSP described the festival as a pioneering initiative for women’s sports in North Kashmir and said first-time events could lay the foundation for lasting traditions.

“This is the first women’s sports event in North Kashmir, and I congratulate you and your entire team,” Talib said. “Whoever organises an event for the first time does not merely organise it — he lays the foundation for it to become a tradition in the years to come.”

Expressing hope that the festival would continue in the coming years, Talib said, “I hope that in the coming years, this event that you have started today will become an annual event in our sporting calendar.”

He also extended his best wishes to the sportspersons, athletes and students who had travelled from different colleges to participate in the festival.

Encouraging the participants to compete with enthusiasm, Talib said sports provide an opportunity to learn regardless of the outcome.

“Whenever you step onto the ground, you always return having learnt something or the other,” he said.

The SSP urged the participants to play freely and participate in the competitions with confidence, saying the lessons gained through sport would remain useful beyond the event.

Talib also appreciated the college management for organising the festival and expressed hope that it would become a permanent fixture in North Kashmir’s sporting calendar.
