Sopore, Apr 17: Police have registered 34 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested around 40 drug peddlers in north Kashmir’s Sopore so far this year as part of a sustained crackdown under the ‘Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir’ campaign, a senior officer said on Friday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Iftikhar Talib, told Kashmir Convener that enforcement action has been intensified to break the supply chain. “We have seized a large quantity of narcotics. Along with arrests, we have also cancelled the registration of about 20 cars and the driving licences of 15 people involved in these cases,” the SSP said.

However, the officer stressed that policing alone cannot end the menace. “My request to the people is that until you participate, the issue of drugs will not end in Sopore. First, make your children aware that this is a pandemic. Fight this war together with us,” he said.

The SSP added that mass awareness programmes are being conducted in schools, villages, and neighbourhoods, with efforts underway to bring together religious leaders, the political class, and civil society.

He said, “In the coming days, we are also arresting notorious drug peddlers. This enforcement will continue,” he added.
