Bandipora, June 04: The Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare Department Bandipora on Thursday launched the month-long “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” at Chittibanday village in Bandipora with an aim to promote soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices among farming communities.
The campaign was inaugurated by Secretary Agriculture, Ghulam Ahmed Sofi, in the presence of Joint Director Extension, officers of the Agriculture Department, local representatives, progressive farmers and members of the farming community.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary underscored the vital role of soil as the foundation of sustainable agriculture, food security and rural livelihoods. He stressed the need for preserving soil health through scientific, eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices to ensure agricultural prosperity for future generations.
The Secretary sensitized farmers about the adverse impacts of excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers on soil fertility, crop productivity and the environment. He urged the farming community to adopt balanced nutrient management practices and embrace organic farming methods for restoring and maintaining soil health.
He highlighted that increased use of organic manures, compost and bio-inputs can significantly reduce soil degradation, improve soil structure and enhance long-term agricultural productivity while ensuring environmental sustainability.
During the programme, the Joint Director Extension interacted with farmers and emphasized the importance of regular soil testing, judicious use of fertilizers and adoption of sustainable agricultural technologies. He called upon farmers to actively participate in the month-long campaign and become ambassadors of soil conservation in their respective areas.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers, students and local residents who expressed keen interest in the awareness initiatives being undertaken under the campaign.
The department informed that the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” will be conducted across the district during the coming weeks through awareness programmes, field demonstrations and farmer interactions aimed at promoting soil conservation, sustainable agriculture and responsible management of agricultural resources.
