Response to Pahalgam attack : India suspends IWT, closes Attari border
Srinagar, April 23: The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to Suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closure of Attari border post, SAARC Visa Ban for Pakistani Nationals, Diplomatic Expulsions.
The meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security was held at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi over the terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jainshankar, NSA Ajit Doval and others. During the meeting, the CCS took stock of the situation.
Briefing the media after the conclusion of Cabinet Committee on Security, CCS, meeting, the Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed that CCS was briefed in detail on the Pahalgam terror attack. It has condemned the attack in the strongest terms. He further informed that strong expressions of support and solidarity have been received from many governments around the world which have unequivocally condemned this terror attack.
The Foreign Secretary informed that the CCS reviewed the overall security situation and directed all forces to maintain high vigil. India will be unrelenting in the pursuit of those who have committed acts of terror or conspired to make them possible .
The landmark 1960 agreement between India and Pakistan has been placed in abeyance with immediate effect. India stated it would remain suspended until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably” renounces support for cross-border terrorism.
The cabinet also decided closure of Attari Integrated Check Post:
Effective immediately, the check post will be closed. Only those with valid endorsements who crossed before May 1, 2025, will be considered exceptions.
SAARC Visa Ban for Pakistani Nationals: Travel under the SAARC Visa Exemption (SVE) scheme has been revoked for all Pakistani citizens. Existing visas are canceled, and those currently in India under this arrangement must leave within 48 hours.
Diplomatic Expulsions: All defence, naval, military, and air advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata and given one week to depart. India will reciprocally withdraw its military attaches from Islamabad, effectively annulling these diplomatic roles.
Downsizing of High Commissions: Both nations’ diplomatic missions will reduce staff strength from 55 to 30 by May 1.
