New Delhi, May 21: Indian Railways on Wednesday urged passengers to remain alert and vigilant during travel and immediately report any suspicious activity or anti-social elements on railway premises through helpline number 139.

The appeal was issued after a high-level security review meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi amid recent incidents targeting railway infrastructure.

Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu, besides senior Railway Board officials, also attended the meeting.

According to the Ministry, Railways are intensively using modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones and CCTV surveillance to enhance the safety of trains, passengers, stations and railway infrastructure across the country.

During the review, officials noted that preliminary investigations into several recent incidents, including fire-related cases, indicated the involvement of anti-social elements. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is actively probing these incidents.

The Ministry stated that in several instances, timely and proactive action by railway authorities helped avert major mishaps.

The meeting focused on strengthening intelligence gathering mechanisms at the field and beat level of the RPF through improved reporting systems and technology-driven monitoring.

Officials also discussed expansion of CCTV coverage across the railway network, deployment of AI-based surveillance systems, enhancement of cyber security measures and better coordination between the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stressed the need for strengthening intelligence gathering from the field using modern technology and faster processing of inputs to ensure better operational security.

The Ministry said passengers can play a key role in preventing anti-social activities by remaining alert while travelling or waiting at railway stations and promptly informing authorities through helpline 139.  (PIB)
