No plan to drop Urdu, only sought public feedback: CM Omar

SRINAGAR, May 1: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday denied any move to drop Urdu from official or academic use, saying the government has only invited public comments on a departmental proposal that is yet to be cleared.

“God save us from such people who cannot differentiate between truth and falsehood,” CM Omar told reporters in Pampore as per Kashmir Convener where he was attending an event of the estate department. “There is no droppage of Urdu.”

His remarks came amid protests by PDP leader Iltija Mufti, who has been criticising the government over reports that Urdu could be removed from certain subjects. CM Omar said the order issued by the government was only to seek feedback, not to implement any change.

“The file is still on my table. I have not approved it, nor do I intend to,” he said.

Taking a direct swipe at the PDP leader, CM Omar said, “She is educated, but perhaps she still needs to understand the difference between asking for public comments and actually dropping a subject.

He challenged critics to show any official order that removes Urdu. “They only showed the order where we invited public comments,” he said, adding that it was “unfortunate” if people could not see the difference.

The Chief Minister also accused the PDP of trying to divert attention from its own political record. “They supported the BJP earlier, and now they are trying to mislead people by raising such issues and focusing only on Urdu,” he said.

Omar said as an elected government, it was its responsibility to seek public feedback on any proposal. “Those who have nothing constructive to offer are trying to push their politics based on falsehood,” he added.
