Srinagar, Oct, 30: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has won First Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Education and Academic Development at the 12th Vibrant India 2026 – Most Vibrant Expo on Government Achievements, held at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi, from October 23 to 25.
Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, Mr. Aban Habib, and Mr. Shebaan Habib represented NIT Srinagar at the three-day national exhibition, showcasing an innovative drone prototype designed for high-altitude and low-temperature environments.
The demonstration highlighted the institute’s efforts to develop indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies suited to the demanding environmental conditions of the Himalayan region and other high-altitude areas.
Organised by NNS Media Group as part of Meri Dilli Utsav, Vibrant India 2026 brought together government organisations, public sector enterprises, institutions, and other stakeholders to showcase achievements and initiatives across various sectors.
The exhibition featured displays relating to Indian Railways, mines, coal, Jal Shakti, tourism, agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, and other areas of national importance.
The drone innovation showcased by the NIT Srinagar team addresses key engineering challenges associated with operating unmanned aerial vehicles in high-altitude environments, where low temperatures and reduced air density can affect battery performance, propulsion efficiency, flight endurance, and structural reliability.
The technology reflects the growing importance of indigenous drone development for specialised applications in mountainous and remote regions. Such technologies have potential applications in infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, high-altitude observation, and other operations requiring reliable aerial systems in challenging conditions.
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, and Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC), Prof. Babar Ahmad, congratulated the team on the achievement.
