NEW DELHI, October 26: Financial assistance under the Centre’s National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme helped a 26-year-old postgraduate from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community overcome financial barriers to international higher education and transition into professional employment in India.

The student, identified as Yukti (name changed), received support under the scheme during 2023-24 to pursue higher studies abroad. The scholarship covered her tuition fees and provided an annual maintenance allowance of £9,900, according to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Yukti’s educational journey was shaped by caste-based discrimination and financial difficulties. Her father was the family’s sole earning member and worked in a low-paying job, leaving limited resources for her education. Despite these constraints, her parents encouraged her to continue studying, while government schools and public scholarships helped her progress academically.

However, the cost of pursuing higher education abroad remained a major obstacle until she secured the NOS scholarship.

The financial assistance eased the burden on her family and enabled her to concentrate on her studies and professional development. Although rising living costs abroad continued to pose challenges, the scholarship provided essential support throughout her academic journey.

According to the ministry, the overseas education also gave Yukti international exposure and advanced academic knowledge, strengthening her professional prospects. She has since entered the private sector in India and is moving towards greater economic independence.

The ministry said the scheme aims to help eligible students from disadvantaged backgrounds access higher education abroad by addressing financial barriers associated with tuition and living expenses.

Yukti’s experience highlights the role of educational assistance in expanding opportunities for students from marginalised communities. Her journey also reflects how government support, family encouragement and personal determination can help students pursue academic and professional ambitions despite social and economic constraints.
