Srinagar, April 23: Sopore Police on Thursday issued a clear warning to drug peddlers, reaffirming a “zero-tolerance policy” during a mega awareness programme and rally at Chijhama, Rafiabad, as part of the 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan.

Presiding over the event, SSP Sopore Iftikhar Talib  said the police would not spare those pushing drugs into the community, while simultaneously calling for a collective societal effort to steer youth away from addiction.

“Tackling drug abuse is not just a police matter. Parents, teachers, and religious leaders must come forward. I particularly appeal to religious scholars to use their platforms,” SSP Talib told the gathering of over 2,000 people, including students, traders, civil society members, and clerics.

Addl. SP Sopore Sarfaraz Bashir and SDPO Rafiabad Sharafat Nawaz were also present.

The SSP elaborated on legal provisions under the NDPS Act, early warning signs of addiction, and existing de-addiction facilities. He encouraged young people to channel their energy into education and sports instead of falling into substance abuse.

Following the awareness session at Dak Bungalow, Chijhama, a massive rally was taken out, with participants holding placards reading “Say No to Drugs” and “Drugs Kill Dreams” while raising slogans against the drug menace.

In a significant move, the public was urged to share information on drug peddling or abuse on a dedicated helpline — 9596773144 — with an assurance that informers’ identities would remain strictly confidential.

Participants resolved to organise mohalla and village-level awareness programmes over the next three months, aiming to turn the campaign into a sustained mass movement across the district.

“Drugs kill dreams. We are committed to protecting the future of our youth,” an official spokesperson said, reiterating Sopore Police’s appeal to all stakeholders to join the mission for a drug-free society.
