Pampore, May 08: Kashmir Medical College and Hospital on Friday successfully conducted its first laparoscopic cholecystectomy, marking the institution’s entry into advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The surgery was performed in the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery at the hospital located in Sempora area of Srinagar district.

Hospital officials said the procedure, which involves removal of a diseased or stone-filled gallbladder through minimally invasive techniques, was successfully carried out by a team led by Sheikh Sajad.

The surgical team also included Azhar and Zahid along with operation theatre staff. The anaesthesiology team was headed by Basharat.

Officials said the patient is recovering well after the operation and has been shifted to the ward.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sheikh Sajad termed the procedure an important step towards strengthening healthcare services in the region. He said the introduction of laparoscopic surgeries at KMCH would help reduce pressure on government hospitals and improve access to advanced surgical care.

He added that minimally invasive surgeries offer benefits including faster recovery, less post-operative pain and shorter hospital stays.

Dr Sheikh Sajad said the institution plans to introduce more advanced surgical procedures in the coming months as part of efforts to expand patient care services.

Principal and Dean of Kashmir Medical College and Hospital, Nazir Ahmad Khan, congratulated the Department of Surgery for the achievement and described the procedure as a landmark development for the institution and the healthcare sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said the hospital is focused on providing affordable and accessible healthcare facilities with modern medical technology for patients across the region.

Prof Nazir Ahmad Khan also said the availability of laparoscopic surgeries at KMCH would help patients avoid long waiting periods and travel for such procedures.
