Indian Army Rescues Seven Civilians Trapped in Swollen Poonch River
Poonch, August 19: In a daring operation, the Indian Army on Tuesday rescued seven civilians, including women and children, who had been stranded on an island in the swollen Poonch River at Lower Kuniyan after heavy rains triggered a sudden rise in water levels.
Officials said the Army received a distress call in the morning and immediately mobilised a specially trained rescue team. The troops, equipped with safety gear, battled strong water currents and difficult terrain to reach the marooned individuals. Despite the risk to their own lives, the soldiers managed to bring all seven civilians to safety without any casualties.
The operation, completed under challenging conditions, drew appreciation from locals who gathered along the riverbank and watched anxiously as the evacuation unfolded. Army officials said the swift response prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
An official spokesperson said the rescue once again highlighted the Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives and its readiness to act decisively in times of natural calamities. “The bravery and compassion shown by the soldiers reflect the values the Indian Army stands for,” an official said, adding that such interventions strengthen the bond of trust between the force and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
