Indian Army Rescues 24 Tourists Stranded at Sunshine Peak in Gulmarg

SRINAGAR, May 08: The Indian Army, in coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police, District Administration Baramulla and the Gulmarg Development Authority, on Thursday successfully rescued 24 tourists stranded at Sunshine Peak in Gulmarg following a technical malfunction in a civil helicopter.

According to an official statement issued by PRO (Defence), Srinagar, the tourists had been ferried to Sunshine Peak, located at an altitude of around 14,000 feet, when the helicopter developed a technical fault, leaving them stranded in the high-altitude area amid worsening weather conditions.

The rescue operation was carried out by Chinar Warriors with support from Army Aviation pilots and aircrew who undertook repeated sorties despite poor visibility, dense cloud cover and challenging mountainous terrain.

Officials said the operation was conducted under adverse weather conditions with rapidly changing climate and hazardous snowbound terrain posing significant operational challenges.

The Army Aviation team carried out precision landings in narrow and difficult landing zones to evacuate the stranded tourists safely.

“All stranded tourists were rescued without any casualty,” the statement said.

The Army said the rescue mission reflected effective coordination between the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, District Administration Baramulla and the Gulmarg Development Authority.

The statement further described the operation as a demonstration of operational preparedness, inter-agency coordination and humanitarian commitment towards safeguarding civilian lives during emergencies in difficult terrain and weather conditions.

The Indian Army also commended the efforts of the pilots, aircrew and associated civil agencies involved in the operation.
