Hajin, July 03: Senior political leader Imtiyaz Parray on Friday strongly condemned the alleged attack on Bandipora MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat during his visit to Naidkhai, terming the incident a “serious assault on democracy.”

“There are no words strong enough to condemn this unfortunate incident. Such acts are unacceptable in a democratic society,” Parray said.

He said Nizam-ud-Din Bhat is a senior political leader who has served the people of Bandipora for more than two decades and was only performing his duty by reviewing developmental works and listening to public grievances.

Parray alleged that the meeting was deliberately disrupted by supporters of a National Conference leader. “Just because a political leader visits Naidkhai to meet people does not mean anyone has the right to vandalise the meeting or intimidate an elected representative. Every political party and leader has the democratic right to visit any area and interact with the public,” he said.

This unfortunate act was not expected from the National Conference leaders. Such behaviour does not befit them or their political legacy.

He further said it did not befit the son of a veteran politician, who himself represented Sonawari for nearly three decades, to allow such an incident to take place. “This kind of hooliganism has no place in politics. Democracy cannot function if public representatives are prevented from meeting the people,” he added.

Parray urged the administration to take strict action against those involved and ensure that elected representatives and government officials can perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
