HKM College Hosts SWEEP Awareness Programme in Bandipora
Bandipora, October 15, 2025: The College SWEEP Cell of Hassan Shah Khoyihami Memorial (HKM) College Bandipora, in collaboration with the District Election Office Bandipora, organized a Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SWEEP) Programme on the theme “Greater Participation for a Stronger Democracy” on 15 October 2025.
An official spokesperson of the organisation said the event began with a warm welcome by Dr. Mubashir Hamid, Officiating Principal, who received the guests from the District Election Office and highlighted the importance of such initiatives in fostering informed and active citizenship.
Prof. Tariq Ahmad Bhat, Head of the Department of History, delivered the introductory remarks, underscoring the objectives of the SWEEP programme in enhancing democratic engagement among students and youth.
The main address was delivered by Mohammad Iqbal Samoon, District Level Management Team (DLMT) Bandipora, who elaborated on the Election Commission of India’s initiatives to increase voter participation. He provided a detailed explanation of the voter registration process, especially targeting newly eligible voters, and demonstrated the use of QR codes as a simple and effective tool to facilitate registration and encourage maximum electoral participation.
Arsullah Habib, District Assistant Nodal Officer, addressed the audience on the significance of voter awareness and civic responsibility in building a robust democratic framework.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Prof. Shahid Shafi, College SWEEP Nodal Officer, while Dr. G. M. Khan served as the rapporteur. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Prof. Sadaf Shafi, who expressed gratitude to the District Election Office, the resource persons, and all participants for their active involvement in promoting electoral awareness and democratic engagement.
The programme successfully highlighted the critical role of youth in strengthening democracy and encouraged students to actively participate in the electoral process, reinforcing the message that informed voters are essential for a vibrant and accountable governance system.
