Bandipora, April 28: Chief Conservator of Forests Kashmir, Irfan Rasool Wani, today visited the historic Forest Training School Chitternar, Bandipora, where he addressed Foresters Batch 107 and emphasized the importance of forest conservation, sustainable development, and eco-tourism promotion in the district.
During his address, he encouraged the trainees to make all possible efforts to protect and preserve the “green gold” of Kashmir, stating that forests are not only a natural resource but also the backbone of ecological balance, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. He said forests play a vital role in maintaining environmental stability, preventing soil erosion, conserving water resources, supporting wildlife, and combating climate change.
He stressed that forest development and conservation activities must be carried out actively with a focused and scientific approach. He said efforts should be made to focus on one compartment instead of the entire forest area, as a compartment can be managed more effectively with the resources already available. He emphasized that the existing system should be properly implemented for better forest management.
Keeping in view the challenges of rainfall and diseases, he said planning should be disease-free and smart so that viruses and other threats can be controlled effectively. He further highlighted that regeneration should be strong, new growth should be visible in different parts, and biodiversity should be maintained in such a way that a balanced mix of different varieties is ensured.
He also underlined the importance of afforestation, community participation, and awareness among the younger generation to ensure long-term forest protection. He said active public involvement and responsible forest management are essential for preserving Kashmir’s rich green heritage for future generations.

Speaking about tourism, he said Bandipora has immense potential in eco-tourism as the district is rich in forests and natural landscapes. He stated that Gurez, one of the major off-road tourist destinations, is being actively promoted by the Forest Department. Camping sites have already been established there, and this year the department is developing Haba Khatoon Park, which is expected to be inaugurated soon.

He further said that at Wular Lake, several facilities are being created to boost eco-tourism, including viewpoint development and bench posts so that tourists travelling to Bandipora and Gurez can stop, enjoy the scenic beauty, and experience the natural charm of the area.
He added that eco-parks developed in different locations, including Chandaji, have already shown positive results, with a significant increase in tourist footfall after their inauguration last year. He said the department will continue to identify more such spots where eco-tourism centres can be established for sustainable tourism development.

Referring to the Forest Training School Chitternar, he said the place itself is an eco-tourism centre where school children and students frequently visit for picnics, excursions, and educational trips. He informed that this year the department is planning to construct an eco-tourism hut there, which will include a museum-type facility to educate children about forests, biodiversity, and environmental conservation while also providing them a space for learning and recreation.
He urged the trainees to work with dedication, discipline, and responsibility for the protection, conservation, and sustainable development of forests, calling them the real guardians of Kashmir’s green wealth.
