Srinagar, Aug 31: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Front (PDF) president and former Cabinet Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Monday accused the government of failing to address public concerns despite receiving a massive mandate, saying people were still waiting for tangible relief and development.
Addressing delegations from Budgam district, Yaseen said people had voted with great expectations, but the government had failed to fulfil its promises. He said two years after the mandate, people continued to face problems related to unemployment, livelihoods, public services and the rising cost of living.
Yaseen said political statements, blame games and claiming credit for ongoing projects would not solve the problems confronting people. He alleged that successive governments had failed to protect the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and accused political parties of “selling power projects, water and other resources” while leaving people to face hardships.
He expressed concern over losses suffered by farmers and horticulturists due to flash floods, heavy rains, hailstorms and other weather-related incidents. Yaseen said many farmers had suffered extensive crop losses but were yet to receive adequate compensation from the Agriculture and Horticulture departments.
Yaseen also demanded strict action over the alleged sale of spurious and substandard pesticides in the market. He called for intensified inspections and a time-bound probe to identify those responsible, saying farmers should not be made victims of negligence and profiteering.
The PDF president said unemployment, rising living costs and limited livelihood opportunities had added to the economic stress faced by people, particularly in Kashmir. He also criticised rising electricity tariffs, saying the common consumer was being burdened without adequate relief.
Yaseen urged the government to improve public services, generate employment opportunities, ensure timely compensation to affected farmers, regulate agricultural inputs and strengthen accountability across departments.
“People will vote when elections are held. This is not the time for politics; this is the time to serve the people. The government must focus on governance, accountability and providing relief to the common man,” he said.
