Defunct Sonburn Irrigation Scheme Restored Following Farmers’ Protest in Sumbal

Sumbal, June 15: A strong protest led by former Municipal Committee (MC) Chairman Sumbal, Jahangir Ahmad Dar, along with dozens of local farmers, on Monday highlighted the closure of the Sonburn irrigation scheme in Sumbal. The demonstrators raised concerns over the non-functional irrigation facility, stating that its closure had severely affected agricultural activities and caused hardships for farming families dependent on the scheme for irrigation.

The protesters urged the Mechanical Irrigation Department to take immediate steps to restore the facility and ensure an uninterrupted water supply to agricultural lands in the area.

Following the protest, the concerned department acted swiftly and initiated necessary measures to make the irrigation scheme functional. The prompt response brought relief to farmers, who welcomed the restoration of the vital irrigation facility.

Expressing satisfaction over the development, Jahangir Ahmad Dar thanked the concerned department as well as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sumbal for their timely intervention and swift action. He said the restoration of the scheme would greatly benefit local farmers and support agricultural activities in the region.
