Srinagar, June 11: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Spokesperson Sunil Sethi on Wednesday expressed concern over the situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), alleging human rights violations and the use of force against civilians protesting for development and basic rights.

In a statement, Sethi claimed that more than 100 civilians had lost their lives at the hands of police and security forces in PoJK. He alleged that residents of the region were seeking development and recognition of their fundamental rights but were facing repression in response.

Sethi said the people of PoJK were living without adequate access to basic rights and were increasingly looking towards the development model of Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged that demands for improved governance and development in the region had been met with force.

The BJP leader further stated that residents of PoJK, whom he described as belonging to India by virtue of the region’s legal status, had continued to await what he termed “freedom” since the events of 1947-48. He attributed the present situation to historical developments following the partition of the subcontinent and subsequent conflict over Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, Sethi said the situation in PoJK should serve as a lesson for those who have supported Pakistan’s policies in the region. He alleged that Pakistan had failed to address the aspirations of the people living in territories under its control.

Drawing parallels with historical events in the region, Sethi claimed that the use of force would not be sufficient to suppress public demands for rights and development. He asserted that the aspirations of the people in PoJK would continue despite security measures.

The BJP spokesperson also expressed concern over possible attempts by elements across the border to divert attention from developments in PoJK. He urged residents of Jammu and Kashmir to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or objects to the police and security agencies.

The remarks come amid continued political debate and differing narratives regarding the situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where various groups have periodically raised concerns relating to governance, economic development and civil rights.
