Baramulla, Oct 06: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday demolished an illegal shed built on flood land in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said, adding that the structure was occupied by the relatives of Mohammed Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack case and hanged in 2013.

According to officials, a Revenue Department team led by a magistrate carried out the demolition drive on the directions of senior officials. “The structure had been illegally occupied on state land, and the operation was conducted under proper legal procedure,” an official said.

Guru, a resident of Sopore in Baramulla district, was convicted and sentenced to death in the 2001 Parliament attack case. He was hanged at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013.

Officials said the administration has repeatedly warned people against constructing or occupying state land, but violations continue to occur without informing the government. Tuesday’s drive, they said, was part of ongoing efforts to clear encroachments from government and flood-prone land in the region.

“Similar operations will continue in the coming days,” an official said, adding that security forces covered the area to ensure the drive passed off peacefully.

In a statement, the government said several kanals of prime State land under illegal occupation had been retrieved in Baramulla district.

“The land, which was allegedly under unauthorized occupation, is situated in a prime location and is estimated to be worth crores of rupees. The eviction was carried out as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to safeguard government land and prevent its unauthorized use and occupation,” the statement read.

The authorities removed the illegal structures and restored the State land to government control. The government said the action underscored its commitment to protecting public property and ensuring that valuable State land is not misappropriated or encroached upon.

The encroachers were identified as Sajad Ahmad Buhroo, Tariq Ahmad Buhroo, Tabasum Guroo, Manzoor Ahmad Buhroo and others.

The administration reiterated that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in illegal encroachment of State land, and that further anti-encroachment drives would continue across the district as per law.
