Bandipora, June 13: Seasonal Casual Labourers (SCLs) of the Mechanical Irrigation Department continued their protest in Bandipora district on Saturday, alleging that despite working throughout the year to maintain irrigation infrastructure, they are paid wages for only five months annually.

The protest was held at the office of the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Mechanical Irrigation Sub-Division, Hajin, where hundreds of labourers from MED Shadipora assembled to press for year-round engagement, wage enhancement, and a clear policy regarding their future employment.

The demonstration was led by State President of the Seasonal Casual Labourers Association Reyaz Ahmad, along with other association leaders and representatives.

The protesting workers said the existing arrangement has left hundreds of families struggling financially, particularly at a time of rising living costs. They maintained that although their services are required throughout the year to ensure the functioning of irrigation facilities, their wages are restricted to only a few months.

Addressing the gathering, association leaders said labourers remain on duty during crucial agricultural seasons when farmers depend heavily on irrigation infrastructure, yet continue to face uncertainty over wages and employment.

The workers demanded that the government either regularize their services or, as an interim measure, grant them Daily Wager status and ensure year-round payment for the work they perform.

They also sought revision of wages in line with present-day economic realities, recognition of their contribution to the department and employment security for workers who have served for years.

The labourers appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior government officials to intervene and address what they described as long-pending and genuine grievances.

Warning that the agitation would continue until concrete measures are taken, the protesters said they would pursue their demands through peaceful and democratic means.

The protest concluded peacefully, with the workers reiterating their resolve to continue the struggle for year-round engagement, better wages and job security. [KNT]
