Veterans day celebrated at Raj Bhawan Jammu

Srinagar, Jan 15: For the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, Armed Forces Veterans Day was celebrated at the Raj Bhawan, Jammu on Monday.

On this significant occasion, as per the statement, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, paid rich tributes to the veterans, acknowledging their valour and sacrifices made in the line of duty to safeguard national interests. 

The event witnessed the presence of a large number of ex-servicemen, Veer Naaris, decorated soldiers, and staff of Sainik Welfare Department, Jammu and Kashmir.

Lt Governor, in his address, announced that the Jammu and Kashmir administration will allocate land for the construction of Sainik Colonies to accommodate families of fallen heroes.

He expressed concern that the Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia for the families of fallen soldiers was insufficient and assured that efforts would be made to raise the amount this year. 

He urged citizens to generously contribute to the Armed Forces Flag Day fund for the welfare of ex-servicemen and Veer Naaris, emphasising the involvement of ex-servicemen, including officers, soldiers, and policemen, in the decisive fight against terrorism.

During the welcome address, Brig Gurmeet Singh Shan, Director Sainik Welfare Department, Jammu and Kashmir, thanked the Lieutenant Governor for implementing numerous welfare schemes for ex-servicemen and widows over the past three years. 

These include enhanced ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs, financial assistance of Rs 5000 per month for veterans of J&K Militia and World War, approval of two 100-bedded children hostels, one each at Jammu and Srinagar, enhanced annuity for various gallantry and distinguished service awards, relaxation in ESM test, age relaxation for recruitment in government jobs, financial assistance for marriage and remarriage, and medical treatment and serious disease grants.

Manoj Sinha also honoured all the veterans and Veer Naaris present during the function and interacted witht hem over a cup of tea.
