Bandipora, 02 March: National Conference (NC) on Saturday organised a protest rally in Bandipora in support of Article 35A of the Indian Constitution, which gives special rights to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution empowers the Jammu and Kashmir state’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.
Led by its former MLA Gh Rasool Naz, scores of NC workers and supporters carrying banners and placards, assembled in NC office marvhed towards Nowpora chowk and raised slogans in support of Article 35A.
The protesters while warning against annulment of the Article 35 A raised slogans."Impairing this provision will amount to weakening the strong bonds between the state and the country," Naz said and cautioned against "any misadventure" on the matter.
Article 35-A, which was incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir and denies property rights to a woman who marries a person from outside the state.
The provision, which leads such women from the state to forfeit their right over property, also applies to their heirs.
