SANKOO, November 5: Community Health Centre (CHC) Sankoo has performed 25 elective Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) surgeries since the joining of Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Rubia Banoo, marking a milestone in the availability of specialist maternal healthcare in the remote areas of Ladakh.

The recent procedures were conducted by Dr Banoo, with anaesthesia support from Dr Asif Hussain, Anaesthetist and Chief Medical Officer, Drass, and the operation theatre staff of CHC Sankoo.

Despite his administrative and professional responsibilities, Dr Hussain travelled around 90 kilometres from Drass to Sankoo to provide anaesthesia support for the surgeries, according to health officials.

Regular LSCS services at CHC Sankoo became operational after Dr Banoo joined the institution as Consultant Gynaecologist. Their availability has reduced the need for pregnant women from remote villages to travel long distances to District Hospital Kargil, Srinagar or Jammu for Caesarean deliveries.

The Gynaecology Outpatient Department at the centre is also functional, offering antenatal and postnatal care, family planning counselling, and diagnosis and treatment of common gynaecological conditions.

Health officials said the expansion of specialist services at the centre was part of efforts to improve access to healthcare in geographically remote areas of Ladakh.

The Block Medical Officer, Sankoo, appreciated the contribution of the specialist doctors, anaesthesia team and operation theatre staff in maintaining the services.

The milestone comes amid efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and specialist services following the creation of District Sankoo.
