New Delhi, October 28: The Centre’s National Overseas Scholarship Scheme enabled a student from a Scheduled Caste family to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) degree at Brown University in the United States by covering key expenses associated with overseas education.

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the beneficiary, identified as Aarav Patel (name changed), received financial assistance of $89,816 during the 2023-24 financial year. The assistance was approved on June 26, 2023, and covered tuition fees, maintenance allowance, visa fees, medical insurance and travel expenses.

The ministry said the student faced financial constraints and limited access to mentorship and professional networks while pursuing his ambitions in technology, business and innovation.

The scholarship helped him access international higher education and gain specialised knowledge and exposure relevant to his professional goals.

The beneficiary is now a business owner and director, working towards building technology-driven enterprises, the ministry said.

The National Overseas Scholarship Scheme supports eligible students from Scheduled Castes and other specified categories in pursuing higher education abroad, subject to the scheme’s guidelines. It seeks to reduce financial barriers by providing assistance for tuition and other essential expenses.

The ministry said the beneficiary’s experience illustrated how targeted educational support could widen access to global academic opportunities and help students develop the skills needed to pursue professional and entrepreneurial careers.
