GUREZ, October 27: Mohammad Hamza Lone, constituency head of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference in Gurez and a former Assembly election candidate, has resigned from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect.
His resignation came a day after he ended a five-day hunger strike demanding the deployment of a gynaecologist at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gurez.
In a resignation letter addressed to party president Sajad Gani Lone and shared on Facebook, Hamza cited personal reasons and differences in views for his decision. He thanked the party leadership for the opportunities and experiences during his association and requested that his resignation be accepted and party records updated accordingly.
Although Hamza did not publicly link his resignation to the hunger strike, people close to him told Kashmir Convener that he was disappointed with the party leadership for not openly supporting his protest.
Local residents also criticised the party for not issuing a statement on the healthcare issue during the hunger strike. Some said the silence of the opposition had added to their disappointment, particularly given the importance of specialist medical services in the remote valley.
“Sajad Lone expresses his views on local, national and international issues, but there was not even a tweet about the healthcare situation in Gurez,” a local youth told Kashmir Convener, describing the silence as indicative of the party’s priorities.
