JK Science Congress 2026 concludes at IUST, calls for greater focus on science and innovation

Awantipora, October 1: The three-day Jammu and Kashmir Science Congress 2026 concluded on Thursday at the Nund Reshi Auditorium of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, with speakers stressing the importance of scientific research, innovation and emerging technologies for sustainable development and a Viksit Jammu and Kashmir.

The Science Congress was organised by IUST in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Science, Technology and Innovation Council (JKSTIC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, under the theme “Science, Innovations and Emerging Technologies for Sustainable and Viksit J&K.”

Sakeena Masood Itoo, Minister for School Education, Higher Education, Health and Medical Education and Social Welfare, was the chief guest, while Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister, participated as the guest of honour. Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST, was the chief patron.

Addressing the gathering, Itoo underscored the role of scientific research, innovation and emerging technologies in addressing developmental challenges and advancing sustainable growth. She stressed the need to provide young researchers and students with greater opportunities to pursue new ideas and contribute to society.

Wani said innovation and technology were essential for accelerating development and bringing positive transformation to society. He emphasised the need to adopt emerging technologies and promote scientific thinking.

Prof. Romshoo highlighted IUST’s efforts to strengthen research, innovation and collaboration among academia, industry and government institutions. He said universities have an important role in creating an enabling ecosystem for scientific advancement and technological innovation.

During the valedictory ceremony, Best Presentation Awards were presented to researchers and participants for outstanding presentations of their research papers.

The event was attended by Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, Dean Academic Affairs, IUST; Dr Abid Shalla, Dean Research, IUST, besides faculty members, scientists, researchers, academicians and students.

The three-day congress brought together scientists, researchers, academicians, innovators, policymakers and students from across the country, providing a platform for deliberations and exchange of ideas on science, innovation and emerging technologies for sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir.
