Srinagar, September 30: The Indian Army conducted 400 cataract surgeries under “OP DRISHTI – KASHMIR 2026” at Tangdhar and Srinagar, providing eye care to civilians and veterans across remote areas of Kashmir.
The initiative was conducted by 92 Base Hospital under the aegis of Chinar Corps in collaboration with the specialist ophthalmology team of Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi.
As part of the initiative, 18 screening camps were held across forward and remote areas including Tangdhar, Dawar, Machhal, Uri, Baramulla, Bandipora, Khanabal and Kangan. Nearly 6,000 patients were screened, of whom 400 were shortlisted for cataract surgery.
In the first phase, 200 cataract surgeries were performed at the Underground Forward Surgical Centre (UG FSC) in Tangdhar on September 24 and 25. The Army said the procedure was conducted in a forward military facility under terrain, weather and space constraints.
The second phase was held at 92 Base Hospital, Badami Bagh Cantonment, Srinagar, on September 28 and 29, where another 200 surgeries were conducted after the surgical team and equipment were moved from Tangdhar.
The initiative culminated in a closing ceremony at Chinar Auditorium, 92 Base Hospital, on September 30. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha attended the event as chief guest, interacted with beneficiaries and participated in the distribution of post-operative kits. Members of the surgical team and other guests were also felicitated.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the initiative demonstrated the armed forces’ healthcare outreach in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir and their efforts to serve local communities.
The beneficiaries and their families also attended the ceremony.
