Bandipora, September 28: More than 400 students and teachers from four government schools came together at PM Shri Government Secondary School Laharwalpora for a Bagless Day programme that combined competitions, cultural activities and hands-on learning.
Students and teachers from Middle School Reshi Mohalla, Primary School Hum Mohalla, Primary School Fisherman Colony and the host school participated in the inter-school programme featuring quiz, speech, Naat and Tilawat competitions.
The highlight of the event was a joint Dastarkhan, where more than 400 students and teachers sat together on the school lawns and shared Namkeen Tea and traditional chapatis.
The arrangements for the gathering were led by students of the host school, giving them practical experience in planning, teamwork, hospitality and event management.
The students prepared around 500 rootis for the gathering. Ten groups, each comprising five students, were assigned responsibility for preparing the chapatis, while tea was served in traditional Samawars on the school lawns.
Students were involved in different stages of the event, from preparing food and organising the gathering to serving guests, making the activity an exercise in responsibility, cooperation and collective work.
The programme also provided students an opportunity to showcase their abilities in quiz, public speaking, Naat and Tilawat. Sixty students received stationery items as prizes in recognition of their participation and performance.
The prizes were distributed by Imam of Jamia Masjid Khursheed Anwar Nadi, who appreciated the participation of students and the efforts of the schools in creating learning opportunities beyond the conventional classroom.
In his address, Nadi urged students to help their parents with household work and respect their advice. He said education should also promote values such as responsibility, respect and service to family and society.
Javaid Jawad, Head of Institution, PM Shri Government Secondary School Laharwalpora, thanked the participating schools, students, teachers and guests for their involvement.
Jawad said the programme was the school’s third Bagless Day event and was organised in line with the experiential and skill-oriented learning approach envisaged under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
“Today, our students were not merely participants; they became organisers, hosts, cooks, servers and team leaders. They learnt how to plan an event, divide responsibilities, work in teams, manage resources and welcome guests. These are life skills that cannot always be learnt from textbooks,” he said.
The programme concluded with students and teachers sharing the Dastarkhan, underscoring the role of collaborative activities in developing practical skills, cultural awareness and a sense of community among students.
