Srinagar, Sep 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed a sharp exchange on Thursday over the government’s announcement of providing the cost of six domestic LPG refills annually to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, with Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma questioning the implementation of the promise and accusing the government of misleading poor families.
The confrontation followed the government’s announcement on the LPG benefit, which is proposed to be provided through Aadhaar-enabled Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to eligible beneficiaries. The government has said the modalities of the scheme are still being worked out.
Sunil Sharma, speaking in the House, challenged the government over the promise of six cylinders and sought an account of earlier commitments made to the people. “Today, they will mislead people with six cylinders. And they won’t even get six cylinders,” Sharma said.
He questioned when the promised benefit would actually reach AAY families, asking the government to clarify the status of the scheme. “This is cheating with the poor people of Jammu and Kashmir,” the LoP said.
The BJP opposed the move in the House, leading to disruption of proceedings as members raised slogans and objections over the issue.
BJP leader also linked the LPG announcement to other commitments made by the government, questioning what had happened to the promises of 24 cylinders and one lakh jobs. “Where have your last 24 cylinders gone? Give an account,” he said, while also asking the government to give an account of its promise of one lakh jobs.
The LoP further questioned the government over its previous statements on artificial intelligence and other policy announcements, asking what had happened to the commitments made earlier. “Where have all these promises you have made gone now?” BJP leader Sunil Sharma said.
