Jammu, September 10: A state-of-the-art desktop simulator will be installed at the Jammu Lobby of Northern Railway to provide loco pilots of Jammu Division with training based on simulated operational conditions, railway authorities said on Thursday.
The simulator will allow loco pilots to practise locomotive operations and respond to different situations without operating an actual locomotive. The facility is intended to strengthen technical skills and regular refresher training at the workplace.
According to the railway authorities, the simulator will recreate operational conditions such as dense fog, heavy rain, landslides and signal failures. It will also enable pilots to practise signalling procedures, braking techniques and locomotive handling.
The system will be used to train loco pilots in responding to emergency situations, including brake failure, overshooting and sudden obstructions on the track. Repeated practice in simulated conditions is expected to help pilots improve their response and decision-making during emergencies.
The simulator will also provide a fuel-free training environment, allowing repeated exercises without operating a locomotive for each training session. Railway officials said the facility would support regular skill development, refresher courses and training of new loco pilots.
The initiative comes alongside awareness programmes being conducted by Jammu Division on the mental health and welfare of loco pilots.
Railway authorities said strengthening training facilities is part of the division’s efforts to improve operational safety and support the Indian Railways’ “Safety First” approach.
