Bandipora, Sep 8: Students and staff of the Gujjar Bakerwal Hostel and NM Higher Secondary School at Kaloosa in Bandipora had a narrow escape on Tuesday afternoon after a large branch of a Chinar tree fell outside the institutions shortly after students entered their classrooms.
The incident occurred minutes after the students had entered their respective classes. Fortunately, no one was injured and no damage to property was reported.
Locals said the concerned institutions had repeatedly written to the administration seeking permission for pruning the tree, but alleged that their requests had not received the necessary response.
“Fortunately, there was no loss of life. Imagine if the branch had fallen during the morning or evening rush or during lunch break. There could have been casualties,” locals said, urging the authorities to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
They said the incident highlighted the need for timely inspection and maintenance of trees located near schools and other public institutions, particularly where branches pose a potential safety risk.
No official from the Revenue Department had visited the spot till the filing of this report.
As per government regulations, there is a ban on the pruning and cutting of Chinar and walnut trees. However, permission can be granted in cases where there are valid reasons, including safety concerns, for pruning or cutting the tree.
Locals have urged the administration to inspect the tree and take appropriate action to prevent any further risk to students and staff in future.
