Srinagar, July 31: The Cooperatives Department, Union Territory of Ladakh, in collaboration with the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society Ltd. and J&K Bank, on Friday organised a Buyer–Seller Meet in Srinagar to promote authentic Ladakh Pashmina and strengthen direct market linkages between herders and buyers.
The event, held at the DIPR Auditorium, aimed to facilitate direct interaction between Pashmina growers, buyers, exporters, traders and business organisations to ensure better price realisation for herders, reduce the role of intermediaries and strengthen the cooperative movement.
Deputy Commissioner Changthang Nitish Rajora, who attended the programme as the chief guest, highlighted the unique geographical landscape of Changthang, home to nearly 1.84 lakh Changra goats. He said cooperative societies play a crucial role in improving market access, ensuring fair remuneration for nomadic herders and preserving the authenticity of Ladakh Pashmina.
More than 100 buyers, exporters, traders, entrepreneurs and representatives of leading business organisations from Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country participated in the event. The meet provided a platform for discussions on quality standards, pricing, long-term procurement and market requirements.
Among those present were Secretary, All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society Ltd., Thinles; Chairman, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) Kashmir, A.P. Vicky Shaw; Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), J&K, Iqram Ali Shafiee; President, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Javed Ahmad Tenga; President, Kashmir Pashmina Welfare Trust, Mubashir Ahmad; President, Tahafuz Society, Mohammad Rafiq Sofi; Zonal Head, Srinagar, J&K Bank, Muzaffar; besides representatives of the Cooperatives Department, District Administration Changthang, artisans, weavers and cooperative members.
During the programme, members of the All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society showcased authentic Ladakh Pashmina and value-added products before prospective buyers and exporters, enabling direct interaction on production methods and quality standards.
Officials also informed that a dedicated digital platform and mobile application for Pashmina growers, artisans and cooperative members would be developed to facilitate digital payments, improve access to government schemes, provide market information and strengthen direct producer-buyer linkages.
An interactive session was also held during which participants discussed quality assurance, branding, GI certification, value addition, digital marketing and expanding domestic as well as international markets for Ladakh Pashmina.
Deputy Registrar Cooperatives Sachin Bali proposed the vote of thanks. The department reaffirmed its commitment to organising more such buyer–seller meets to strengthen market access and ensure greater benefits for Pashmina herders in Changthang.
