Srinagar, Jul 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Housing and Urban Development Department on Thursday launched a mass distribution and pasting drive of instructional stickers across all Urban Local Bodies to enforce the four-bin waste segregation system under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
An official told Kashmir Convener that the campaign, being carried out under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, is aimed at streamlining municipal waste processing, protecting sanitation workers and reducing the volume of waste sent to dumping grounds across the Union Territory.
He said the Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation are leading the execution of the drive across residential households, commercial hubs and high-footfall areas.
Dedicated Community Mobilisers and Swachhata Executives are visiting door-to-door, interacting with residents and pasting colour-coded instructional stickers at prominent collection points to establish segregation at the source, the officials added.
According to the colour-coding protocol, the blue sticker denotes dry recyclable waste such as paper, plastic, glass, metal cans, cardboard boxes and Tetra Paks, with the instruction that all materials must be clean and dry. The green sticker covers biodegradable wet waste, including food scraps, vegetable and fruit peels, leftover meals, tea leaves, coffee grounds and garden waste.
For specialised waste, the red sticker guides safe disposal of hygiene items such as sanitary pads, diapers, cotton, tissues, wet wipes and menstrual cups. The black sticker addresses household hazardous waste, providing explicit guidelines for used batteries, expired medicines, thermometers, tube lights, bulbs, chemicals and nail polish removers.
The field staff are continuing their outreach in every municipal ward across all ULBs, officials said.
