Kupwara, June 22: Continuing its efforts to promote menstrual health awareness and challenge the stigma associated with menstruation, the Youth Innovation Foundation (YIF) organized a menstrual hygiene awareness workshop at Government Girls Middle School, Suhipora, Kupwara. The session was conducted by Sidrat Mehraj, a certified educator of the Foundation.

The workshop focused on educating adolescent girls about menstruation, menstrual hygiene management, and the importance of maintaining proper health and hygiene during menstrual cycles. Sidrat sensitized the students about the biological aspects of menstruation, addressed prevalent myths and misconceptions, and encouraged open and informed discussions on menstrual health.

During the interactive session, students actively participated and raised questions regarding menstrual hygiene, health concerns, nutrition, and self-care practices during periods. The participants engaged enthusiastically and expressed themselves freely, discussing issues that are often considered taboo in society. Their queries were addressed in a supportive and informative manner, helping enhance awareness and confidence among the young girls.

An official spokesperson of the Youth Innovation Foundation, while talking to Kashmir Convener, said that menstrual health education plays a crucial role in empowering adolescent girls and enabling them to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. “Creating awareness and encouraging open conversations around menstruation are essential steps towards building a society free from stigma and misinformation,” the spokesperson said.

To further strengthen learning and awareness, menstrual education comic books were distributed among the students. The comics provided age-appropriate and easy-to-understand information, enabling the girls to continue learning about menstrual health beyond the classroom setting.

The spokesperson reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to conducting similar awareness programmes in schools and communities across Jammu and Kashmir to promote menstrual health, dignity, and informed health choices among adolescents.

The school administration appreciated the initiative and thanked the Youth Innovation Foundation and Sidrat Mehraj for organizing a meaningful and impactful awareness session for the students.
