Shopian, June 6: In observance of World Environment Day 2026, the Wildlife Division Shopian organized an environmental awareness programme at Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable natural resource management.
The programme was aimed at sensitizing participants about the importance of preserving ecosystems, protecting wildlife habitats, and adopting environmentally responsible practices to address the growing challenges posed by climate change and ecological degradation. The significance of collective action in safeguarding the environment for future generations was emphasized during the event.
The programme was headed by Rayees Ahmad Reshi, Range Officer Hirpora, and Amir Ahmad Ganaie, Block Officer, under the guidance of Sohail Ahmad Wagay, Assistant Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) / Wildlife Warden, officials told Kashmir Convener. Shopian-Pulwama.
Speaking on the occasion, the officers highlighted the ecological importance of Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary and underscored the need for strengthening conservation efforts through active public participation, environmental awareness, and community engagement. They emphasized that World Environment Day serves as an important platform for fostering environmental consciousness and inspiring meaningful action towards the protection of nature and wildlife.
As part of the celebrations, a plantation drive was conducted within the sanctuary premises, wherein indigenous saplings were planted by officers, officials, students, and other participants. The plantation activity symbolized the Department’s continued commitment towards enhancing green cover, restoring ecological balance, and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from representatives of Wildlife SOS, students from nearby educational institutions, local community members, and other stakeholders. Participants actively engaged in discussions on environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and sustainable resource management, reflecting a shared commitment towards safeguarding the region’s rich natural heritage.
