Srinagar, May 16: Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma on Saturday promoted fuel conservation and austerity measures by taking a traditional tonga ride in Kashmir as part of the ongoing “Petrol Bachao Abhiyan.”
Sharing a video on social media, the Minister appealed to people to reduce unnecessary use of vehicles and adopt traditional modes of transport to save fuel and support environmental sustainability.
Sharma said that traditional transport systems like tongas can help minimise petrol consumption and also preserve Kashmir’s cultural heritage. He urged people to actively participate in the austerity campaign and support fuel-saving initiatives.
During the ride, the Minister said he was pleased to experience the traditional mode of travel during the peak tourist season and welcomed tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir.
The initiative comes amid a nationwide call for austerity and fuel conservation following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for optimum use of resources and reduction in unnecessary expenditure.
In Jammu and Kashmir, several departments have already initiated measures to curb fuel usage and official expenditure. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior police officers have also reportedly reduced vehicle movement as part of the campaign.
The Minister’s symbolic tonga ride drew wide attention on social media, with many users appreciating the message of environmental awareness, sustainable tourism and promotion of Kashmir’s traditional transport culture. (KNC)
